UNDERSTANDING STANSTED ROUTES FROM OUR AREA
Stansted is one of the longer airport journeys from our core areas, and the route plays a big part in how the journey runs.
From Aylesbury, Haddenham and surrounding villages, most journeys begin via the A41 or A418 before joining the M40. From there, routes typically continue around the M25 and then up towards the M11.
From Thame, Chinnor and the Oxfordshire side, the journey often involves joining the M40 earlier, but timing around the eastern side of the M25 becomes more important as traffic builds during the day.
From Tring, Hemel Hempstead and the Hertfordshire side, the route is more direct towards the M25 and M11, but this doesn’t remove the main pressure points. The M25–M11 junction is one of the most unpredictable parts of the journey, particularly during afternoon and early evening periods.
Because of this, we don’t rely on standard journey estimates. Longer motorway journeys leave less room for delays, so departure times are planned around expected traffic conditions across the entire route rather than simply the distance to Stansted.
