Leaving Long Crendon Before the Motorway
For many Heathrow journeys, the first move is down Thame Road towards Thame.
School traffic, temporary roadworks or traffic controls on this section can make a noticeable difference, particularly at busy times of day. Once further towards Thame, the roundabout by the Esso garage is another point where traffic can build during the morning and afternoon rush.
Those delays happen before the motorway journey has even started.
Once that section clears, we normally have two sensible choices for reaching the M40 southbound. Which one we use depends on what is happening beyond Thame as well as the traffic immediately in front of us.
That local decision is one of the reasons a Heathrow journey from Long Crendon shouldn’t be treated as a simple point-to-point map route.

M40 Junction 6 or Junction 7?
One option runs across towards Postcombe and Lewknor, joining the M40 southbound at Junction 6.
The other takes us through the Thame side, past the ASM roundabout and The Oxfordshire Golf Hotel & Spa, before joining the M40 southbound at Junction 7.
Junction 7 is a restricted junction, but it provides southbound access towards London and Heathrow.
There can be very little between the two routes when traffic is moving well. On some journeys one route may be slightly shorter while the other is a minute or two quicker.
We therefore don’t make the decision purely on mileage.
What matters is what is happening further down the M40 and towards the M25. Saving a few minutes around Thame achieves very little if that route feeds directly into slower traffic further south.
Once the motorway section is clear, the journey normally continues on the M40 towards the M25 and Heathrow.

When We Avoid Thame Altogether
There are occasions when travelling through Thame simply isn’t the best option.
If the normal route out is badly affected, an alternative can take us through Chearsley, Cuddington and Haddenham, continuing towards Princes Risborough and High Wycombe before joining the M40 further south.
It is a longer route, so we don’t use it just because traffic is moving slowly for a few minutes.
The decision comes down to how much time is being lost on the normal road and whether the alternative is genuinely moving better.
This is one of those journeys where the shortest route and the quickest route are not always the same.

Heathrow Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5

The terminal doesn’t normally determine how we leave Long Crendon, but it does matter once the journey reaches Heathrow.
Terminals 2 and 3 are in Heathrow’s central terminal area, while Terminals 4 and 5 have separate final approaches. We confirm the terminal before travel so the driver is heading to the correct drop-off point rather than treating Heathrow as one single destination.

The return journey works differently because the collection needs to follow your flight rather than a fixed village pickup time.
We monitor your inbound flight and adjust the collection around the actual arrival. There is no waiting charge simply because the flight itself is delayed.
After landing, you still need time for passport control where applicable, baggage reclaim and getting through the terminal.
